This one-day, in-person introductory course provides a clear and practical guide to the basic elements of traditional and low-rise residential construction. Aimed at non-technical professionals, it helps participants understand how buildings are constructed and identifies the most common defects that can occur.

Neil has a wealth of experience and has worked in property management for over 30 years. He has been a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) since its amalgamation with the Incorporated Society of Valuers and Auctioneers (ISVA) back in 2000, as well as holding a Fellowship of The Property Institute. His dedication and expertise are things that his clients continue to trust year after year.

What You'll Learn

  • The makeup and function of the superstructure
  • An overview of utilities and building services
  • Identifying and understanding common building defects
  • Recognising causes and signs of:
    • Penetration damp
    • Condensation
    • Water ingress
    • Wet rot and dry rot
    • Roofing problems
    • Subsidence and ground movement

  • More experienced practitioners who know the legal framework required to safely manage a portfolio, but who are not as familiar with the practicalities of a building.
