The government wants to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill by increasing the recycling of waste. The target is to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill by 50% by 2020. Local authorities are required to produce strategies to reduce waste and increase the recycling and composting of household waste. Local authorities are also charged for each ton of waste that goes to landfill and so are keen to find ways to increase recycling.
